In our e-learning we walk you through our complete urban transformation method and process, starting with some crucial theoretical background so you are fully aware of the context and force field in which you are running your project. We then help you to set up your own local strategy and walk you through the key ingredients to step by step fill it in, sharing a lot of practical examples and tips and crucial soft skill insights.

In our first module we lay out the basic principles and ingredients for collaborative urban transformation. We dive into our 7-layered model and step by step explain how to use this for your own strategy – and translate it into actionable workflows for your team and organisation. We combine high-level strategic advice and practical illustrations and tips and tricks.
> understanding the complex dynamics in transformation areas
> understanding the consequences of dispersed property
> make a quick area analysis while building stakeholder relations
> set up an integral strategy for your area, using our 7-layer model
> translate your strategy into actionable & adaptive year plans
> build your team with the necessary expertise and soft skills
> set up your team so that it can evolve into an independent organisation
> structurally engage the different departments of your organisation
> insights & soft skills to get started straightaway – and keep going
In the next modules we zoom in on the different layers of our model. We take you through all ingredients you need and explain how they are connected for maximum effect and leverage. In this software module we focus on both externally oriented activities, like branding and pr, and on the internal community engagement. These form the two top layers in our 7-layered model. Your software activities help to reach out and relate to all the different stakeholders, big and small, and activate them to get engaged in the urban transformation. They can create enormous energy and trigger a sense of togetherness and support base in the area. Not only at the start, but throughout the whole development process.
> strategically embed software actions for maximum effect & leverage
> craft an actionable local narrative for all different stakeholders
> translate your narrative into action and become visible in the area
> connect and join forces with existing local networks
> build a community from scratch & reach people beyond ‘usual suspects’
> build an efficient network of communication channels & databases
> start a substantive dialogue and co-creation in your area
> turn one-off participation into structural engagement & partnership
> sustainably safeguard the collective energy you build over time
In this module we focus on the hardware aspects. In our 7-layered model these form the two centre layers, one about spatial planning and design and one about actual physical interventions – in the broad sense, this may vary from small or temporary gardens or artworks to large building projects. Successful development or transformation of existing urban areas fundamentally acknowledges the dynamics and dependencies in the area and the stakeholders. Although there is much focus on process and engagement here, there is still a very important role for spatial planning and design – albeit in different forms and emphases throughout the process.
> introduce the spatial goals & challenges to different stakeholders
> build a spatial database of interests for collective action & investment
> set up a structural co-design process with different stakeholders
> design an adaptive future vision & a practical transformation path
> fore- & back-cast between future goals, stepping stones and action
> critical success factors for designing future transformation visions
> recognise dependencies & fragilities in your plans to stay resilient
> kickstart transformation through temporary action & placemaking
> grow local support & co-ownership around the transformation
This module is about the orgware aspects. These are at the almost bottom of our 7-layered model. We make a rough distinction here between financing plus investments – and coalitions plus governance. The orgware plays a crucial role in the overall urban transformation as this is where the actual collaboration between all the different types of public, private and civic stakeholders is formally negotiated and sustainably safeguarded. However, this can also be a tough job. How do you keep this light and actionable?
> what does it mean to work with many different local stakeholders
> utilise different interests & dependencies as driver for transformation
> build your first local coalitions from scratch
> implement platform-thinking in your transformation process
> effectively build up local coalitions & governance in layers
> insight in different governance models for urban transformation
> unlock public, private & civic investments for the transformation
> build collective business models & grow support from scratch
> build towards local self-organisation & safeguard this internally too
In this last module we discuss the different types of tools and technology you can use to support, augment, catalyse and – very important – safeguard your work. There are many solutions available on the market and many more to come, or you can build them yourself. The power and success of your project partly lies in the adequate composition and creative richness of your toolbox, from very simple and analogue tools to advanced and data-driven platforms. And of course, in the adequate implementation both in the area and in your own organisation.
> the different roles tooling can have in your transformation process
> rapidly kickstart your urban process with simple & analogue tools
> combine different actions & functions into one digital platform
> critical insights in developing and scaling new tools & platforms
> embed urban collaboration tooling in your team & organisation
> activate & adopt urban collaboration tooling in your area
> use tooling to grow local ownership & make your own work lighter
> build your own locally specific and hybrid (online + offline) toolbox
> get inspired by our hybrid development roadmap to enrich your own
